COM 1051 Introduction to Communication
A survey of the nature and impact of communication. Beginning with an overview of the discipline known as communication, students will survey the symbolic bases and functions of communication, traditional media and selected new technologies, and the contexts of communication, i.e., interpersonal, educational, group, and organizational.

COM 1052 Media Arts
A practical course introducing students to the audio-visual media of communication. Projects will be used to acquaint students with media development, application and production. Lectures, demonstrations and production of materials will comprise the content and experiential elements for the course.

COM 2010 Speaking to Inform & Persuade
A general education course where students prepare and present a series of speeches. Emphasis focuses on selecting topics appropriate for specific audiences, gathering and analyzing materials, supporting points with evidence and logical reasoning, and achieving clear and effective styles of delivery. This course does not count as a communication elective.

COM 2031 Telecommunications
A practical course in micro-computer applications. Students will study how the information environment an assembly of computers, communication systems, libraries and people can be organized to handle information efficiently. Fundamental applications for using personal computers will provide the foundation for developing student projects that require students to develop proficiency with word processing, graphics, databases and a variety of software applications.

COM 2051 Black & White Photography
A course designed to introduce students to the basic techniques of exposure and development in black and white photography. Emphasis will be on technical as well as aesthetic characteristics. The photograph will be studied as a medium for documentation, representation, and expression. Photography laboratory fee is required.

COM 3012 Publication Design
An advanced course in computer application. Students will be introduced to the methods, tools, language, and techniques used to bring artwork and copy to the final printed page. Emphasis will be on graphic style, form, message content, and response to graphic media. Students will have the opportunity to do creative problem-solving projects over the entire semester. In addition to computer graphic techniques, students will work with traditional layout methods. Prerequisite: COM 2031. A lab fee is required.

COM 3023 Video Field Production
An intermediate course designed to explore the dynamics of video field production. Theory and technical training combine to enable students to develop proficiency in operating professional level video equipment. Students will take a video project from conception to final production. Prerequisite: COM 1052. Lab fee required.

COM 3130 News Writing I
Instruction and practice with common written forms used in professional situations such as print and broadcast news gathering and reporting, wire service rewrites, depth reporting and news beats. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.
3 credit hours Offered: Fall 2003

COM 3230 News Writing II
Emphasis on advanced techniques of news gathering and reporting such as news conferences, columns, editorials, and advertising and public relations copy. Prerequisite: COM 3031.
3 credit hours Offered: Spring 2004

COM 3034 Public Relations
A course designed to associate students with various aspects of public relations including writing assignments for various types of communiqués, group activities, and public presentations. Students will work with problems of language and style in preparation of copy for a variety of media. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.

COM 3054 Communication Law & Ethics
A course designed to immerse students in the areas of law and ethics affecting communication professionals. Topics covered include laws pertaining to media dissemination, libel, copyright, plagiarism, the right to reply, and privacy. Case studies will be discussed along with the relevancy of laws as they pertain to today’s society.

COM 3063 Elements of Professional Communication
This course is designed to provide instruction and practice in professional communication settings. Elements of the course illustrate communication situations and techniques for providing effective communication. Skill development is the use of a variety of communication tools will address work-related situations. This course is designed for students who have competencies in writing and are capable of demonstrating their abilities through practical assignments and in-class exercises.

COM 4050 Special Topics in Communication
Faculty and students explore new fields of research or areas of interest in communication and communication technology not covered in standard course offerings. Possible titles include: Emerging Communication Technologies, Communication Theory, Audio Production, Media Performance, Digital Communication, Web Design, and Advanced Media Production. Prerequisites: COM 1051, COM 1052, COM 2031, and permission of the instructor.

COM 4061 Career Planning
Students develop skills in interviewing, résumé writing, portfolio preparation, and other issues relevant to preparing a strategy for marketing themselves for either employment or graduate school. Prerequisite: senior status.

COM 4080 Independent Study
Independent study options are available, but the student may enroll in no more than one independent study per semester. The student must have an approved focus of study and support of a faculty member from within the student's major. Requisite: Department approval.

COM 3070 - 4070 Media Practicum
(Practical experiences should be reserved for students admitted to the major or minoring in communication, writing, or journalism.)
1 credit hour Offered: Every semester

COM 3075-4075 Field Experience
Placement of majors in community service situations to provide opportunities to apply and develop skills acquired in the classroom. Requisite: Students must have a minimum of 64 credit hours earned and obtain departmental approval of site and proposed learning experience to register.
3-6 credit hour Offered: Every semester

COM 3085-4085 Internship
Placement of majors in professional situations for extended periods of time. Requisite: Students must have a minimum of 64 credit hours earned and obtain departmental approval of site and proposed learning experience to register.
3-6 credit hours Offered: Every semester

COM 4095 Seminar in Communication
A seminar in selected communication issues or problems. Included will be readings and reviews of current literature as appropriate to the major topic presented in the seminar. Students will be involved in the research and oral defense of a resource project.

ENG 0080 Reading Enhancement
Development and improvement of reading comprehension and speed; elective, but may be required for students deficient in reading; individualized class three hours per week. This course does not count for AA or BA degree credit.

ENG 0090 Basic English Review
A review course in fundamental skills of grammar and composition; elective, but may be assigned for students who are deficient in composition skills and who must earn a grade of C or above before enrollment in ENG 1010 Composition I. This course does not count for AA or BA degree credit.

ENG 1010 Composition I
This course focuses on three objectives: to enable students to develop adequate reading, writing, and critical thinking skills; to assist students in making a successful transition into academic discourse, and to emphasize organizational skills in writing. A grade of "C" or above is required.

ENG 1020 Composition II
Develop and enhance writing techniques acquired in ENG 1010, with emphasis on strengthening critical and analytical thinking and underscoring research skills. A grade of “C” or above is required. Prerequisite: ENG 1010

ENG 2013 Early American Literature
A broad study of Early American literature from the Colonial period through the 19th Century. Major periods and figures as well as ethnic and minority literatures will be covered. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.

ENG 2014 Modern American Literature
A study of 20th Century American literature including a comprehensive study in the area of adolescent literature. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.
3 credit hours Offered: Spring 2003

ENG 2020 World Literature
A significant study of literary genres illustrated through important works of world literature including contributions from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.

ENG 2023 Early British Literature
A survey of the development of British Literature from Anglo-Saxon times through the eighteenth century with emphasis on major figures and genres in historical context. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.
3 credit hours Offered: Fall 2003

ENG 2024 Modern British Literature
Nineteenth and twentieth century literature studied in detail with emphasis on Romantic, Victorian and Edwardian contributions to modern thought. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.

ENG 3130 News Writing I

Instruction and practice in the common forms of expository writing, argument and persuasion, advanced library research and documentation, and the theories behind effective written communication. Prerequisite: ENG 1020.

ENG 3044 Multicultural Literature
The literatures of various American subcultures Native American, Hispanic, African American studied in detail and covering essential characteristics and representative writings. Prerequisite: ENG 1020

ENG 3054 Shakespeare
An introductory study of Shakespeare’s major tragedies and comedies. The plays will be studied in chronological sequence for a comparison of his earlier and later periods, with a recognition of Shakespeare’s debt to previous authors and his unique ability to transform dramatic conventions into masterpieces by his development of characters and unmatched use of language. Prerequisite: ENG 2021or permission of the instructor.

ENG 3060 History of English Language
A developmental and cultural history of British and American English. The course will present the beginnings of the English language as a branch of the Indo-European family and the “ability” of English to absorb other vocabularies without losing its distinct identity. Students will trace the spread of English from England to America and other parts of the world, noting significant changes in structure and pronunciation. The emergence of English as the world’s language and the impact of other languages on American English in recent years will be considered. No prerequisite required.

ENG 3073 Literary Theory
The examination of schools, methods, and writers of literary and cultural theory, such as deconstruction, feminism, new criticism, and Marxism. Of particular importance will be the detailed presentation of a biblical Christian approach to the study of literature, indicating the sufficiency and desirability of a biblical Christian view of life, including literature and social theories. The course will require a significant research project. Prerequisite: any literature offering.

ENG 4000 Advanced Grammar
Intense study of grammatical structures -traditional, structural, transformational- and the relationship of grammar to language standards and discourse.

ENG 4023 Creative Writing
A foundational course in the techniques of writing literary forms and in the development of critical appreciation of the art of writing.
3 credit hours Offered: Fall 2003

ENG 4033 American Writers
Intense study of individual writers in the American literary traditions. May be repeated once for credit when content changes. The course will focus on selected works of not more than three American writers and will investigate both personal and social influences on their writings, as well as the effects of the authors on American literature and culture. Typical studies might include, for example, an examination of the writings of Langston Hughes and Claude McKay and the birth of the Harlem Renaissance and the flowering African-American literature. Significant library research and the writing of research papers will be included. Prerequisite: ENG 2011 or 2012.

ENG 4044 British Writers
Intense study of individual writers in the British literary traditions. May be repeated once for credit when content changes. The course will focus on not more than three British writers and will investigate both personal and social influences on their writings, as well as the effects of the authors on British literature and culture. Typical studies might include, for example, an examination of the writings of Chaucer and the birth of modern English versification in contrast to Anglo-Saxon writings such as Beowulf. Significant library research and the writing of research papers will be included. Prerequisite: ENG 2021 or 2212.
