Students who plan to complete the Teacher Education Foundational Core & Professional Semester must be admitted to the major. Admission is provided through a formal application submitted in the second semester of the sophomore year for students currently enrolled or upon admission to the college for students transferring to Warner Southern College in their junior year. Admission must be granted before students can enroll in more than 12 credit hours or one semester of course work. For admission to the major and the Teacher Education program, the student will:

  1. Meet requirements for admission to Warner Southern College.

  2. Complete at least 60 credit hours during the term when application is made.

  3. Complete English composition and college mathematics with a grade of "C" or higher.

  4. Meet the state of Florida minimum performance standards: have a GPA of 2.5 or higher in the general education component of undergraduate studies or have completed the requirements for a baccalaureate degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale from any college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association as defined by state board rule; and pass the Florida Teacher Certification General Knowledge test.

  5. Submit two (2) letters of reference indicating the student is a suitable candidate for Teacher Education. These should be from a high school teacher or counselor, an instructor at Warner Southern College, an employer (present or past), and/or a pastor.

  6. Present evidence of background check by submitting a current Substitute Teacher Certificate, proof of approved school volunteer status, proof of employment in a school district, or be fingerprinted.

  7. Complete a written interview by responding in writing to questions provided by the department and participate in an oral interview upon request.
Retention in the Teacher Education program requires maintenance of a 2.5 or higher GPA with a grade of "C" or higher in all Teacher Education and major area courses.

In addition to the regular graduation requirements, Teacher Education graduates must make a passing score on the Florida Teacher Certification Exam for the Professional and Subject Area exam for their area and complete a portfolio of evidence that they have demonstrated competence at the Preprofessional level for the Accomplished Practices.
