Associate of Arts Course Descriptions
ENG1010: Composition I
This course focuses on three objectives: to enable students to develop adequate reading, writing, and critical thinking skills; to assist students in making a successful transition into academic discourse; and to emphasize organizational skills in writing.
ENG1020: Composition II
Develop and enhance writing techniques acquired in ENG1010, with emphasis on strengthening critical and analytical thinking and underscoring research skills.
COM2010: Speaking to Inform and Persuade
A general education course where students prepare and present a series of speeches. Emphasis will be on selecting topics appropriate for specific audiences, gathering and analyzing materials, supporting points with evidence and logical reasoning, and achieving clear and effective styles of delivery.
MATH1030: College Mathematics
This course surveys the structure and concepts of mathematics. Topics include set theory, logic, informal geometry, number systems, and algebraic concepts.
MAT2000: Statistics
This course is designed to teach basic skills in descriptive and inferential statistics. Experience in collecting, organizing, summarizing data, and drawing conclusions on the data, are given emphasis. Use of appropriate technology, such as graphing calculators, and computer software to better understand and interpret data, are developed throughout the course.
BSC1010: General Biology
An introduction to the nature of science, atomic and molecular structure, cell structure and function, energetics and metabolism structure and function of plants and animals, and genetic and ecological principles.
SCI1010: Physical Science
Examination of the nature of science and the history of selected concepts, with emphasis on inter-relationships among science, technology, society, and Biblical values. An introduction to the basic concepts of physic and chemistry.
BST1010: Life of Christ
A course designed to introduce students to the story of Jesus as recorded in the four Gospels. His life, claims, and teachings will be examined in order to consider their relevance for today.
PED1000: Physical Education
This course is designed to develop an understanding of good health practices, fitness, and attitudes that lead to participation during and beyond the college setting.
FAS2005: Music in the Western World
Designed to acquaint the student with representative music from the major periods of western civilization. Historical in its framework, this course focuses on developing the skills necessary to appreciate the musical arts.
HIS1020: United States History
Survey examination of the developing principles and perennial issues of life in the United States within a world setting from a Christian perspective using primary source materials, traditional and current historiographical interpretation, and present problem analyses.
ENG3001: Contemporary American Fiction
A student of American literature after 1960 from a variety of authors providing a comprehensive study of recent American fiction.
PSY2000: Introduction to Psychology
A survey of the field of psychology as a social science, with particular attention to the theories, methods, and issues which characterize it and to the processes which are basic to human behavior.
SOC2000: Introduction to Sociology
A survey of sociology, with particular attention to theories, methods, issues, and five basic institutions of society with their social and cultural processes.
GEO2013: World Geography
Selected aspects of earth-sun relationship, weather and climate, geologic processes (including earth structure and sculpturing of the earth’s surface), and geographic facts and interdependencies between the developed and developing world.
