On January 15, Crumb and Get It Cookie Company had their Grand Opening ribbon cutting ceremony for the new site in Lakeland. The bakery was filled with attendees and even a special guest, Lakeland Mayor Howard Wiggs, who did the honors of cutting the ribbon. This celebration hit close to home though, for the owners of the bakery are Warner alumni.

Christie Portillo and Chris McMurray, who are co-owners of the new bakeshop in Lakeland, both graduated at Warner along with their spouses. Chris (BA ’03) graduated with a Music Ministry degree, and his wife Kelly (BA ‘04) graduated with a Music Education degree. Christie (BA ’03) got her degree in Elementary Education and is also a teacher at Bethune Academy in Haines City. Her husband Ismael graduated in 1999 with a Church Ministry degree.

Chris and his wife Kelly are the founders of Crumb and Get It Cookie Company, where their first shop began in Radford, Va. It later became a franchised operation with the opening in Fredericksburg, Va., and the third franchise now in Lakeland.

As for the goodies, there were cookies and cupcakes galore at the ceremony, each tasting more delicious than the last.  The shop is a custom-order bakeshop with cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and more. A customer can come in and choose a sweet on the spot or they can create their own. Just select how many, then choose the dough and the mix-ins, and it’s done.

Congratulations to a few great Warner alums on their new business!
