05.09.07 - STU Site Baseball Royals Drop Game 1 to ERAU
MIAMI, FL - There were no last-ditch home runs or extra inning thrillers this time, just solid hitting and timely baserunning that led No. 11 Embry-Riddle to a 12-3 victory over No. 24 Warner Southern in the first round of the Region XIV tournament at Frank R. Esposito Stadium on the campus of St. Thomas University.
Embry-Riddle pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of five Warner Southern errors to move into the winner's bracket of the tournament.
The Eagles drew first blood in the opening frame, as Michael Brady reached on an error and scored on Brandon Decker's sacrifice fly to center. Embry-Riddle had a chance increase the lead in the first, but Colin Gray and Danny Martin struck out with the bases loaded.
Every starter had a hit for ERAU, who increased their lead to 2-0 in the second when Kevin Ferreiro, courtesy running after Chris Trappy had singled, scored on Steven Howard's single.
Warner Southern got on the board in a bizarre happenstance in the bottom of the second. Victor Joaquin's grounder to first was fielded by Brandon Decker, and as he attempted to throw down to second to start a double play, the ball hit Brad Menadier in the back. Menadier was called out for interference, but Christian Martinez, who had opened the inning with a walk, scored on the play.
The Royals had taken two of three from the Eagles when the teams met in early April in Lake Wales, needing back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to overcome a 6-3 deficit in the opener, and needing extra innings to take the doubleheader nightcap.
The Eagles loaded the bases again in the fifth, sandwiching walks to Kyle Albright and Amadis Padilla around a hit from Decker, and the third walk of the inning from WSC starter Rene Ramirez increased the lead to 3-1. Danny Martin and pinch-hitter John Prano hit sacrifice flies to drive in two more runs and increase the lead to 5-1.
There were hints of yet another Warner Southern rally, as Mark Davis hit his tenth homer of the year, tucking the ball inside the right field foul pole to trim the ERAU lead to 6-3. After Menadier reached on an error to extend the inning, Ron Matheny grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Embry-Riddle restored the previous margin in the seventh as WSC reliever John Durham lost control and Martin scored on a wild pitch. Howard drove in another run with a groundout to shortstop.
The Royals made one last gasp rally when Matheny and Lowry reached with two out in the sixth, chasing Letko and setting the table for Davis. But Chris Maloney relieved and promptly struck out Davis to end the threat.
ERAU added four runs over the final two innings for the final score.
Brian Letko (11-1) earned the win, striking out five in six and two-thirds innings of work. Maloney pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game.
The Eagles (42-9) will await the winner of tournament hosts St. Thomas and Thomas (Ga.). The Royals (30-22) drop into the loser's bracket and will face the loser of St. Thomas-Thomas in an elimination game on Wednesday.

Game One

The Lady Bobcats would respond with lead off hitter Dru Daniels hitting a single into center field to start off the bottom of the first. With a single from third baseman Tina Diaz the Lady Bobcats began to take advantage. A passed ball allowed Daniels to advance to third and Diaz to second. Then an error by the third baseman allowed Daniels to score. Senior Melissa Steuber hit a single into left field allowing Diaz to score. The score at the end of the first inning was 2-0 in favor of the Lady Bobcats.
It would prove that was all the Lady Bobcats would need to win game one. In the bottom of the second Dru Daniels hit a triple, but with two out she was left.
The Lady Royals would being to come back in the top of the sixth with Lyndsey Geib's double to left field. She would advance to third on a wild pitch and then be stranded.
Then in the top of the seventh the Lady Royals would attack again. This time lead off hitter Meagan Smith would hit a single to the second baseman. She would be called out on the next batter, Jessica Sanchez, who reached on a fielder's choice. The third batter of the inning was Betsy Holloman who would be walked by Diebler. The two runners' for the Royals would be left on base at the end of the game.
Kelly Diebler pitched five and two-thirds of hitless ball in game one, allowing two hits and walking one.
Game Two
Game two did not start as smoothly for the Lady Bobcats as game one did. Pitcher Melissa Steuber hit Meagan Smith to give the Lady Royals a runner in the top of the first. She would make it around to third where she was left stranded.
The Lady Bobcats took their first turn at the plate for game two with Dru Daniels leading off. Daniels would reach first base on a catcher's interference. She would advance to second on a balk by Lady Royals pitcher Samantha Swofford. Tina Diaz would sacrifice to the first baseman to advance Dru Daniels to third. Senior Melissa Giesler would get her first RBI of the day when she singled to the second baseman bringing Daniels home. That would be all that the Lady Bobcats would get in the first with Giesler having been caught stealing second base. The third inning is where the Lady Royals began to open up a lead. With three runs and three hits the score quickly changed from the Lady Bobcats favor to that of the Lady Royals.
The Lady Bobcats were not able to respond until the bottom of the fourth when they tied the game up at three apiece. The other Lady Bobcat run of the inning was scored by Christy Rutherford who crossed the plate on a single from Giesler.
The Lady Royals though would break the tie in the top of the fifth starting with a homerun by first baseman Betsy Holloman. She would be followed by three more Lady Royal runs to make the game 7-3 after a full five innings had been played.
In the top of the sixth the Lady Royals would add a two run homerun from again from Holloman. That would make the score 9-3.
But the Lady Bobcats would finally shut down the Lady Royals with the pitching staff of the Lady Bobcats only allowing two hits between the last six Lady Royal batters of the day. The Lady Bobcats offense would begin hitting again in their half of the sixth four runs being scored. Melissa Giesler would bring in her last two RBIs of the game on a double to left field bringing both Christy Rutherford and Daniels.
In the bottom of the seventh the Lady Bobcats, down by two, would attempt to either tie the game up or win it after lead off hitter Gina Guffanti hit a triple into the left field corner. She would be brought home on a sacrifice by senior Brittany Rhodes. Rutherford, who had singled to left field, was out on a fielder's choice and Dru Daniels was caught stealing to end the game. The final score game two was 9-8 in favor of the Lady Royals.
The Lady Bobcats next action is their final home game of the season on Friday, April 27, 2007 at the Bobcat Softball field as they take on Savannah College of Art and Design in a double header beginning at 2:00 pm.

04.07.07 Athletic Department 9th Annual Golf Tournament is a Sensation
LAKE WALES, FL - The Warner Southern College 9th Annual Athletic Golf Scramble included over a hundred players from around the county heading to Oakwood Golf Club at 7 a.m. The tournament included gifts for every participant, games at different holes, a raffle & silent auction, and a pig roast for lunch.
But, what does it take to be successful in a scramble?
According to Golf Digests’ David Owens, “first, you need a guy who can drive the ball really far and really straight. Next, you want someone who pures his irons, so that you can be sure of getting at least one ball close on every hole. It’s also important to have at least one guy on the team who’s really good at sticking it tight from 50 yards and in. And for the short stuff, you’re going to need someone who handles the up-and-downs.”
Owens also says the truly crucial skill in a scramble is putting. The secret weapon on a team is going to be a guy who is probably the best putter you’ve ever played with.
So, what teams had all four of these characteristics? That would be George Traill, Mike Henry, Charlie Waldon and Ron Kingry. They shot a 57 to beat the second place team by only one stroke. This team received four passes to Walt Disney World.
Gary Henkelman, Chas Stewart, Michael Sharp and Chris Hughes were the second place team shooting 58; each of them received tickets to the 2007 Lakeland Thunderbolts game. And Lee Arnold, Matt Arnold, Mark Arnold and Richard Bills came in third place with a 60, receiving gift certificates to Beef O’Brady’s.
All teams participating in the tournament received a bag full of gifts; including a towel (donated by Sports Section), a hat (donated by Sam’s Sport Shop), mini-golf bags (with tees, divot repairs, and ball maker), a sleeve of balls (donated by Play It Again Sports) and some snacks.

"Chris Rivera did a fantastic job in pacing her through the finish," added Larios.
"Obviously, after running another personal best in the 3,000 meters (11:42) last week at Embry-Riddle, she demonstrated that she was properly recovered from the 15K and she was ready to run again, and soon.
This half marathon wasn't really scheduled, but with the cold front in Georgia, and her recent performances, it felt right to do this now. The entire team is proud of Merissa, she's come so far in less than one year... she is the perfect example of how anyone can improve if they commit to working consistently!"

02.19.07 Track & Field RELAY TEAMS SHINE AT CLERMONT'S WINDY TRACK MEET
CLERMONT, FL - The men's 4x400m relay team hit the NAIA's "A" qualifying standard at this weekend's windy Clermont track meet. "We knew it was only a matter of time that they would hit the "A" standard," said head coach Jose Larios.
With Kenny Scott and Troy Alston resting this weekend, the Royals went to newcomer Josh Woods (FR) as their opening leg. "Without a doubt, Wood's sub-50 sec lead leg made all the difference. He was able to hand-off in first place and the rest of the guys did their job." The other three long sprinters earning their ticket to the 2007 NAIA Indoor National Championships are Jeremy Harris, Ralph Florvella, and Imari Dale.
Also running a stellar performance was the men's distance medley relay team of Cornelius Rotich (FR), Jeremy Harris (SO), Ralph Florvella (SR), and George Irangi (SO). Though they held off a talented Embry-Riddle DMR squad, they just missed hitting the NAIA's "B" qualifying standard by a mere .17 second. "We knew this relay team would really have to perform in order to make it to Johnson City [national meet]. But, now I think we left about 8 seconds out there, we can run faster. The boys will have to determine whether they want to try this again, or go for the 4x800m qualifying time," added Larios. "All in all, we had a good day. We feel we might have two or three more qualifiers next weekend."
Other notable performances were Daniel Perkins' (SR) attempts at 15'2" in the pole vault and Arilicia Adkins' (FR) debut in the 3000 meters (11:14). And running off site in Tampa, FL, at the Gasparilla 15K Classic, Merissa Knauer (SO) improved nearly 7 minutes from last year's time by finishing in 1:07.26.
So far, the Royals will be representing WSC at the Indoor National Championships with a total of 8 athletes. And with next weekend's Embry-Riddle Last Chance Meet, the Royals may need to reserve a few more hotel rooms in Johnson City.
Congratulations to the following Royals for qualifying this Indoor season thus far:
Chelsia James (Charlotte HS)- shot put
Missy Darr (Charlotte HS)- 60 Hurdles
Imari Dale (Edgewater HS)- 400m and 4x400m Relay
Jeremy Harris (Apopka HS)- 600m and 4x400m Relay
Kenny Scott (Winter Springs HS)- 60m Hurdles
Josh Wood (Port Charlotte HS)- 4x400m Relay
Ralph Florvella (Pompano Beach Ely HS)- 4x400m Relay
Troy Alston (Jacksonville Wolfson) 4x400m Relay (alternate)
