Royals suffer tough loss to Bobcats

LAKE WALES, Fla. – In a game riddled with penalties, the Warner Southern College men’s soccer team suffered their second conference loss in a row, third overall to the St. Thomas University Bobcats to drop their record to 11-3-1 and 5-3 in the conference and to improve the Bobcats to 5-10-1 and 2-6 in conference.

The game began rather sluggish, as neither team was able to establish their offense right away. Although the offense for each team took a while to be established, the yellow cards flew rather quickly as the first yellow card was issued to Daniel De La Cruz for the Bobcats in the fifth minute.  Bobcats’ midfielder Jan Wiechmann received his first yellow card of the game in the 27th minute.

The Royals broke out of their slump and attacked the Bobcats’ defense in the first half outshooting the Bobcats 10-1 but the Royals could not capitalize on their shots. The first goal of the game came in the 28th minute on a penalty kick from Sebastian Hebeir; the penalty was caused by a handball by the Royals in the box.

The second half opened up with the Royals back on the attack, outshooting the Bobcats nine to two in the second half. The up-tempo attack of the Royals caused fits for the Bobcats as they racked up five more yellow cards in the second half; Wiechmann received a red card in the 69th minute.  Although the Bobcats shots were limited, they made sure they counted as Andres Amortegui put the Bobcats up 2-0 in the 67th minute with an unassisted goal.

In a move that paid off, Coach Bienias switched out starting goalkeeper Luis Rincon for Robert Highley and made Rincon play in the field. The switch was helpful as Rincon scored the lone goal for the Royals on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

Overall, the game had nine yellow cards, one red card and23 fouls, 11 for the Bobcats and 12 for the Royals.
