School of Education - Exercise Science
Thank you for your interest in the exercise science major. Our students are often students who have been involved in a variety of health, fitness, wellness and sports activities and desire to study the health and science aspects of exercise and physical activities.
Exercise science is the study of how and why the human body responds to exercise and physical activity. The field is comprised of various sub-disciplines including exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, motor learning, nutrition and the psychology of physical activity.
Students interested in the exercise science major will need a strong background in the sciences including biology, mathematics, chemistry and physics. Undergraduate exercise science programs are typically broad-based and include study in biology, biochemistry, human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, nutrition and fitness programming.
Exercise science students use their studies to advance their understanding of how the body responds to physical activity and exercise and to advocate physical activity to prevent and treat diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, to enhance health and to improve sports performance.
