Academic Skills Center (ASC)

Warner Southern College desires to see students who enroll make progress toward a degree. In order to assist in this effort, the college has created and staffed an Academic Skills Center (ASC). The ASC will help students identify their academic needs and outline an individualized plan to overcome any difficulties. Students may self-refer or be referred by a faculty member.

The ASC is committed to promoting the success of students and emphasizing educational excellence in a racially and culturally diverse community. The ASC offers tutoring in lower-division courses, paper review and critique through our Writing Center function, alternative testing and proctoring accommodations, as well as resources to assist with General Knowledge test preparation for Teacher Education students.

Mission Statement

In the ASC, diverse student populations with multiple educational needs are provided with a sensitive, empowering environment that fosters academic excellence, the development of self-determined persistence to become successful lifetime learners, and the ability to incorporate Christian values into their everyday lives.

Goals

  • Provide tutorial assistance to help students improve their performance in their classes.

  • Emphasize learning strategies that enable students to become independent learners.

  • Work cooperatively with faculty and staff across campus to improve opportunities for students to be successful.

  • Provide testing support and accommodations in compliance with faculty and student needs with a process that assures integrity and security.

  • Encourage tutors to become stronger students and increase their sensitivity to the needs of others through interaction with the students they assist and other tutors.

  • Provide learning support for special needs students, including returning adults, culturally diverse students, the physically challenged, first-generation college students, and other at-risk student populations.
