How do I obtain tutoring services in the ASC?

Beginning fall 2006, all students requesting tutoring, paper review and/or testing services will required to complete an initial questionnaire. This (one-time) questionnaire will enable the ASC staff to assist students more efficiently as well as more effectively report their efforts on behalf of the student. Upon completing the questionnaire, students may access tutoring services by following procedures as listed below:

If you would like to receive tutoring, please make an appointment with the tutor in the subject area where you need assistance. This will ensure that your time with the tutor will not be interrupted and that you will receive his/her full attention. When making your appointment, please provide as much information as possible regarding what you need (e.g. chapter 9, section 1; or ‘factoring polynomials’). This enables the tutor to be more prepared for your visit. If you have not made an appointment, we cannot guarantee that a tutor will be available during your free time. Walk-ins will only be accepted if the tutor you wish to see is not already committed during that tutoring session.

Why do I need to make an appointment?

For paper review, this eliminates the need for students to wait 48 hours to receive feedback. Additionally, this eliminates the need to return to the ASC to ask questions about suggested corrections. Students will meet with an English tutor, receive immediate feedback, and not have to be concerned about receiving their papers back in time to edit them before the due date. It is incumbent upon the student to make sure he/she makes an appointment in enough time to see the tutor before papers are due.

For math tutoring, this ensures that the student receiving tutoring has the full attention of the tutor. While working with a tutor, having another student ask a “quick question” can be distracting, and can disrupt the concentration of the student currently being assisted. If you need to ask a “quick question,” please wait until the next available time slot and either schedule an appointment or ‘walk-in’ if no one is scheduled.

Can you still review my papers?

Yes; however, the process has changed a bit. If you need for someone to review a paper, you must make an appointment. Please bring a typewritten copy of the paper, as well as information for any sources (books, articles, etc.) that you have used to write the paper. The English tutor will explain in detail any grammatical or technical errors, and provide details regarding their correction. He/she will also assist with proper APA/MLA citations, if requested. Your paper will be returned to you at the end of the session. Upon review, the student is then responsible for making specific corrections based on the tutor’s recommendations. Note: Papers need not be completed prior to making a review appointment.
