The Young Man and the Starfish**
A Story Inspired by Loren Eiseley Star Throwers Program Logo

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk along the beach. In the distance he caught sight of a young man who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer he saw that the young man was picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

"What are you doing?" the wise man asked. "The sun is coming up and the tide is going out; if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But young man, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along it - you can't possibly make a difference."

The young man bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it lovingly back into the ocean, past the breaking waves. "It made a difference for that one one," he replied.

** You see there are enormous needs in our world and many of us are like the "wise" man. We see all the needs and think we can't make a difference. But we need to be like the young man. We need to choose our beach and make a difference in our world. Our challenge is to make a difference...Be a Star Thrower!

Star Thrower Program

The Star Thrower Program is designed to inspire, instruct, challenge and offer opportunities for students of Warner Southern College to make a difference in their world!

  • Annual Star Thrower Week
At the beginning of each school year, there will be a special week designated Star Thrower Week. The campus community will be made aware of the various opportunities for service during the upcoming year. Students will be challenged to make a commitment to serve in one of the agencies for the remainder of the semester, or year.

  • Star Thrower Chapels/Convocations
Special Chapels/Convocations will be scheduled with guest speakers designated to challenge and inspire the Warner Southern Community.

  • Star Thrower Luncheons
Monthly luncheons will be scheduled for special presentations and interaction between the students and agency administrators and/or volunteers.

  • Star Thrower Service Projects
Service projects will be scheduled throughout the semester, which will include, but not be limited to: food drives, Park clean-up, painting homes of the needy, working with the Lake Wales Care Center for various needs.

  • Star Thrower Spring Break
